I was a God

And it was a extraordinary feeling. My children looked up to me, admired me and believed with all their heart everything I said. I was immortal and knew everything. I vividly remember the time when my daughter asked, “What was Lincoln like?” Such trust!

Then it all seemed to go bad. She grew into that dreaded scourge commonly known as a teenager. Overnight it seemed my beard turned white, my confidence was shattered and we became alienated from each other. At the time I attributed it to my work schedule. Working 12-14 hour days in order to meet contractual deadlines left little time for family. And being on contract I didn’t get paid overtime. In fact I wasn’t paid extra at all, at least not directly.

By putting in the effort I did manage to keep my job and accumulate comp time. The company had a policy that when you had accumulated eight weeks of comp time you had to take or lose it. Since I had nearly the maximum accumulated comp time my wife and I talked it over and decided to schedule a long six week vacation generally referred to afterwards as the trip.

I have to confess I eagerly looked forward to the trip. Not just for the vacation itself but traveling six weeks with my wife, my daughter and my son would give me a chance to reconnect and strengthen family ties that had been strained by my job. However, not everything went as I’d foreseen and the trip proved to be somewhat of an eyeopener into the world of father/teenage daughter relations.
