Mom, Dad’s cooking Again!

Searching for an answer I remembered that we were supposed to also have rice. My wife told me to just follow the instructions on the box but there, in the kitchen, I suddenly had a brilliant idea. I’d just use the rice to decorate the meat loaf and cook the whole meal that way. Adding some pearl onions and some assorted herbs for more decoration and flavor I stuck the whole thing in the oven at the appointed time and waited for my wife to come home and admire my handiwork.

It was a beautiful meat loaf once it was cooked and eagerly we sat down to eat dinner. My wife agreed that she’d seen nothing like it in her life. What glorious praise!

“Wait until you taste it,” I said.

Oh, there were a few minor glitches but they were minor and they could happen to anybody. Who knew that rice doesn’t really cook in grease. There nestled in meat loaf hollows were scores of rice patties filled with rock hard rice grains but then, what’s the big deal over a few cracked teeth? Sure the onions were charred but that gave the meat loaf a nice roasted charcoal flavor.

There was also slightly more grease in and on the meat loaf than I was used to but my wife assured me it tasted just fine. All in all though not bad for a first try. I was still learning but I could tell my wife was impressed as she tried to give me a few minor cooking tips.

“Next time use the stale bread I gave you under the meat loaf to soak up the grease and don’t put any pits that collect grease on top. Oh, and cook the rice in water. …” her voice intoned as she gradually became lost in thought before adding “On second thought, just wait until I get home and I’ll cook it myself.”

That’s my wife for you, always thoughtful, but, of course, I had no intention foisting all the cooking chores back on her. After all, cooking was in my blood now and my creative juices were flowing nonstop! I’ll just note in closing that, unlike some people I know, I’m more than willing to listen to suggestions for improvement and I did like her suggestion that I cook the rice in water but that’s a topic for another post.
