The Naked Economy

But all of these mistakes pale when we consider the root cause of our economic crisis for we have shed the protective clothing that created an economic system that at one time was the envy of the world. Sadly this is no longer the case as we have all but squandered our birthright away. How, you might ask. Well, that’s the rub. We’ve been brainwashed by generations of ideologues to ignore history and believe in the myth of free trade which is currently exemplified by NAFTA and GATT agreements and our own tariff laws.
You don’t believe me. Surely, you think, free trade is good for us. Haven’t generations of economists and politicians told us so. How can it be a myth and how can it have such disastrous consequences?
Well, keep reading and while you continue to read ask yourself this question, Do you really think that getting rid of free trade can make things any worse than they are now? The current free trade policies have already generated the worse economic crisis this country has seen in more than 70 years. History now clearly reveals that laissez-faire free trade policies are disastrous while at the same time historical data also clearly shows that reasonable protectionism policies are necessary in order for an economy to prosper.
We can best understand the unfolding calamity by examining how we managed to arrive at this free trade catastrophe. We got here because the proponents of free trade have managed to effectively brainwash an entire generation by convincing us that laissez-faire free trade is good for us. How, you ask. Simple, by employing the triple strategy of using distorted or irrelevant data, revising or ignoring history, and propaganda. Let’s examine each of these in turn:
