Rancor, character assignations, and selfishness that, unfortunately, is what I all too often find in trying to research these contentious issues and the situation saddens me. For some time now these issues have bothered me. I couldn’t (still can’t fully) sort out the various issues from the sound bites and PR slogans. Hoping to gain enough insight to form an intelligent position I turned to books and the Internet for help. This was a complete failure because even the published “debates” seem to become immediately uncivil degenerating into name calling, imputing the integrity of one’s opponent, or assigning the most extreme and vile motives to the opposition. In fact the issues themselves seem to largely ignored. Instead of reasoned debate mostly what is available is either “how to” or strategy articles. What particularly disturbing to me is the level of violence these debates spawn.
With no useful help available from the various warring factions I decided to put aside the rhetoric and try to independently reason my way to a conclusion. In considering the issues of the morals and rights for abortion and contraception it seems to me that the resolution hinges on the answers to the following four basic questions:
- When does life start?
- What are the child’s legal rights?
- What are the legal and moral rights of the parents?
- What are the legal and moral responsibilities of the parents?
Let’s discuss each of these questions and see where that leads us.
