1001 horsepower, that's what the ad said. Apparently 1000 horses wasn't enough. They had to emphasize that 1 extra horsepower. If you are going to be ostentatious you may as well be sure people notice!

Or perhaps it's a Christmas devil that's been stealing my memories. Since I've returned home from the nursing home I can't seem to find very many but I have dredged up a few. Some good, some humorous and a few scary but all precious.

"Hold that plane!" We urged arriving at the departure gate. Our return home escapade was already episodic (see Air Adventures II) but finally we'd caught a plane just before departure. With more passengers streaming behind us from the airline "limo" ride for this flight we tried to help them by holding the airplane for them. It was a futile gesture as the next crisis was already starting.

"That flight's been canceled."
"What do you mean canceled? The information monitor lists it as on schedule," I was not happy. A long and difficult work week away from home and family had finally ended with this fresh obstacle facing us. I was unhappy but my business colleague was steamed! Faced with imperious indifference he blew his top as he not too gently informed the airline employee that his response was not acceptable.

Terrified, back rigid the young lady held the aircraft arm rests with a death grip. With eyes glazed forward she sat unmoving throughout the entire flight. Did I say young? She was little more than a girl, perhaps a teen. I sat next to my temporary traveling companion and tried conversing with her but she didn't hear or see me. I doubt if she saw anything though her intense concentration.

Yes, life did go on beyond the grade - the Lewiston grade that is. At the time I wasn't so sure. It was early in our married life and we'd recently moved to Northern Idaho and believe me that was a cultural shock for a city boy like me. Communication didn't always proceed smoothly despite the illusion of a common language. My wife on the other hand being an old Minnesota farm girl fit in like a custom glove except in one particular. She never got used to driving mountain roads. Fortunately, or so I thought, for some reason I had no such trouble. In fact, I rather enjoyed the challenge.
